The Washington Demons have set a high standard for themselves in boys’ golf lately, reaching the state tournament in two of the last three years, and they’ll try to live up to that high bar once again and punch some tickets to state when they play today in a Class 3A district meet at Pin Oak Links in Manchester.
The Demons were the runner-up as a team while hosting sectionals this past Wednesday at Washington Golf & Country Club, falling only seven strokes shy of catching the winners from Solon, but they nonetheless give themselves a chance at back-to-back district championships for a team with seven victories in 2025.
Rajan Roth will be looking to win a second straight individual district title for Washington. The junior got the victory in a playoff at Williamsburg last year, and after missing much of this spring due to injury, Roth returned with a four-over-par 74 and was third overall at sectionals in his first 18-hole event of the season.
Fellow juniors Drew Conrad and Carson Brown are coming off 78s at sectionals and have been the Demons’ top players so far this year. Conrad has four wins and 10 finishes in the top 10 this spring, while Brown has also won once and has seven top 10s.
Washington senior Cole Vetter was the individual Southeast Conference Tournament champion with a career-low 72 and joins Conrad, Brown and senior Conner Leyden in having average scores of 87 strokes or less in 18-hole meets.
The Demons will be competing against hosting West Delaware today, as well as golfers from Williamsburg, Solon, Keokuk, West Liberty, Burlington Notre Dame, Mount Vernon, Marion and Decorah. The Class 3A district tournament in Manchester tees off this morning at 10.
