The Washington Demons’ full roster for this year’s track and field state championships is now set after they found out Friday they had earned five at-large bids into the Class 3A field.

That includes on the girls’ side, where they pick up four additional events that they will take part in. Junior Leighton Messinger will run in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles after picking up an at-large berth in the 400, while sophomore Jaedyn Moore earns an at-large bid to state in the open 200 meters.

Washington’s 4-by-400-meter relay makes it into the Class 3A field thanks to the quartet of seniors Lauren Horak and Kendall Hinrichsen and freshmen Lauren Drahota and Jaslyn Villa.

The Demons also qualify for state in the 4-by-800, as Hinrichsen, Horak, junior Iris Dahl and sophomore Emma Horak earn the very last at-large slot in Des Moines. They join the 4-by-100 and shuttle hurdles relays that already earned automatic bids at state after top-two finishes at districts, as did Dahl in the 1,500 meters.

The Washington boys pick up a wild-card berth at state for their distance medley relay. While the team of seniors Seth Shepherd, Keider Gomez Valdez, Logan McDole and Tyler Alderton took third at their qualifying meet at Mount Vernon, they ran the 10th-fastest time across the entire state.

Alderton also makes his way to the 800-meter field, adding to the auto-bid the Demons locked up in the 4-by-800 and the district titles for sophomore Greyson Hartman in both the shot put and the discus throw.

Junior Josh Anderson was a district champion in the 100, 200 and 400-meter wheelchair races and also qualifies for the wheelchair 800. He has state medals in all four races in each of the last two years and will look for more when Washington competes at the Class 3A state meet starting Thursday at Drake Stadium.
