Both the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Sigourney Savages won team championships at boys’ golf sectional tournaments yesterday. Winfield-Mount Union had a combined team score of 336 strokes to finish 14 ahead of second-place Wapello in their Class 1A sectional victory at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Winfield.

The Wolves also produced the individual tournament champion in Justin Knipfer, who shot an eight-over-par 78 to earn medalist honors. Fellow sophomore Cody Milks and juniors Nick Sparrow and Konner Kinneberg were tied for third by each firing an 86 for WMU, junior Max Edwards was one stroke behind them in a tie for sixth.

Junior Grant Anderson added a 92 as Winfield-Mount Union advances to districts as a team for a third straight year. Sigourney was just as impressive in winning the 1A sectional tournament that they hosted yesterday, posting a team score of 286 that was almost 40 strokes less than second-place Wayne.

Freshman Jordan Tremmel went under par with a 69 to lead the Savages, while junior Solon Yates and senior Cain Weber were not far behind by each carding a 71. Junior Josh Wyatt was just on the other side of par with a 75, as was senior Isaac Bruns with a 77.

Sophomore Ike Molyneux added a 78 as Sigourney wins its second straight team title at sectionals. While the Savages now head to Anita for districts on Monday for a shot at the state tournament, Winfield-Mount Union will play in a district tournament at Wapello.

While they would not be moving on to districts, the WACO Warriors were led by a 93 from freshman Ian Maize at Winfield and the Highland Huskies were paced by an even 100 from sophomore Isaac Giesmann.
