The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls’ soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Centerville on the road Tuesday. After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats found their footing on the attack and cruised to their fourth win in the last five matches.

Senior Frannie Sosa scored two of Columbus/WMU’s goals, while sophomore Iris Garza had the other. Sosa and freshman Jenelis Panchillo each had assists, while junior goalkeeper Sarai Martinez made a pair of saves in a shutout that raises’ the Wildcats’ record to 4-6.

The Columbus boys would not have the same luck Tuesday, scoring twice in the first half at Centerville but seeing the Big Reds match that total before halftime. Neither side broke through in the second half of a 2-2 draw.

The Wildcats were coming off a 3-2 loss the night before to conference rival Danville. After trailing 3-0 at the break, Columbus tried to claw their way back but fell just short. The ‘Cats are now 3-8-1, including a 1-6 record in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
