The Washington Demons earned a conference win in girls’ soccer last night by defeating Fairfield 4-1 at Washington Wellness Park. Washington took the initial lead in the seventh minute when freshman Aimee Rangel scored a goal after a header attempt by senior Maya Murphy was loose in the box.

The Demons would double their advantage going into halftime, as a foul in the box in the final seconds of the first half led to a penalty kick that senior Ana Mata would bury in the back of the net. Fairfield would get one back in the 56th minute, but Murphy scored off a feed from junior Jocci Carter five minutes later.

Junior Nelly Cuevas would put the finishing touches on a victory by scoring her first career goal for Washington in the 76th minute. The victory means the Demons raise their record to 3-4 in the Southeast Conference and 6-5 overall.

The Washington boys would not get the same result on the road against Fairfield. Despite trailing only 1-0 at halftime, the Demons would never crack the scoreboard and would see the Trojans continue to score on their way to winning 5-0.

The loss drops Washington to 2-11, including a 1-6 record in conference play. Both Demon soccer teams next hit the pitch Thursday against Fort Madison.
