It was close, but the Washington Demons again found a way to win a conference meet in boys’ golf yesterday at Elks Fairview Golf Course in Keokuk. Washington’s team score of 160 combined strokes would be four less than runner-up Mount Pleasant and 10 better than third-place Fort Madison.

Junior Carson Brown stepped up to help the Demons win a 15th straight Southeast Conference event by getting his first career individual victory. Brown’s medalist round of three-over-par 38 featured no result worse than three bogeys over nine holes.

Drew Conrad was only shot back of Brown after getting birdie on the second hole to go with five bogeys. Fellow junior Rajan Roth added a 41 for Washington, getting birdie on the seventh but recording a triple-bogey on the ninth to go with four bogeys.

Senior Cole Vetter’s round of 42 included four bogeys, while sophomore Kaleb Orr shot a 43 and senior Conner Leyden finished with 48 to give the Demons three team victories in as many events this season.

The Washington girls would finish fourth as a team at their Southeast Conference meet yesterday at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Park in Fort Madison, posting a combined score of 227.

Sophomore Lucy Sands led the Demons by firing a 16-over 52 and was tied for seventh overall, while senior Lauren Hinrichsen posted a 54 and freshman Elizabeth Hora had a 59. While the Washington ladies next head to Keokuk on Thursday, the Demon boys next play at Mount Pleasant that same day.
