The Washington Demons got their first victory of the boys’ soccer season last night by defeating Burlington 1-0 at Washington Wellness Park. Despite Burlington controlling possession most of the game, Washington was able to take the match to halftime in a scoreless tie.
The game would stay level until the 63rd minute. A run got the ball to Demons sophomore Nery Salazar, who set up junior Edwin Cortes on the left side of the field to fire in a perfect shot into the top-left corner of the goal.
Cortes’ second goal of the season would prove to be the difference. After an 0-3 start to the season, Washington wins its first Southeast Conference match of the season.
The Demon girls would not have the same good fortune, losing 4-0 at Burlington. Already down 2-0 by halftime, Washington would not be able to win their conference opener and fell to 2-2 overall. While the Demon boys next play Monday at Mount Pleasant, the ladies are back in action tonight at Central Lee,
