Last Saturday the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department invited the community to enjoy breakfast as they traded their typical tools for spatulas, grills and other cooking utensils, hosting their annual Pancake Day Fundraiser. Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says, the day was a success on all levels, “Kalona’s pancake day was a great success. Community support was great. We served 3,223 people, 2,563 in-house and 660 to-go containers. We can get the things on our list including our new battery operated jaws-of-life, replace some of our rescue equipment that’s getting into that 10 to 20 year range and it’s going to allow us to get new rescue equipment. It was a great day. I want to thank everyone that came out, everyone that donated, just want to tell everybody thank you for the support, contributions, and we’ll do it again next year!”
The Firemen served the Kalona community more than 8000 eggs, 1600lbs of sausage and 700lbs of pancakes. This is the 41st annual event which started in 1984
