A Davenport man was arrested attempting to cash a fraudulent check in Winfield. April 1st, court documents report 58-year-old Lee J. McDuffee III attempted to pass off a check at Pilot Grove Savings Bank in Winfield. Staff requested identification from McDuffee and noted he was displaying nervous behavior. The check was from Meyers and James Construction Company Incorporated. When bank personnel contacted the business, the owners said the check was forged, that the number matched another check they had written to someone else in a different amount. During the call, McDuffee took his identification and fled the bank. He was seen later walking north out of town by Scott Roen of the Winfield Police Department.
Roen detained McDuffie, who said during questioning that he had been stopped by two guys in a black SUV in Davenport, who asked him if he wanted to “make some money”. The men then had McDuffie enter the vehicle and told him they were driving to Winfield to cash the check, dropping him off at West Elm Apartments to walk to the bank. These individuals were not present when McDuffie left the bank. During a search, McDuffie was found to be in possession of a metal pipe.
McDuffie was charged with forgery, a Class D felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. McDuffie is being held in the Henry County Jail on $5,000 bond.
