With April and spring upon us, Washington County Conservation is hard at work to prepare the landscape for the new season. Conservation Board Executive Director Zach Rozmus says that prescribed burns are still scheduled at the Nolan and Fuller Additions of the English River Wildlife Area and Foster Pond near Wellman, Schmitter Heritage Area near Brighton, Rubio Wildlife Area, Kewash Nature Trail at Keota, Willow Pond near Washington, Clemons Creek near Washington, and the Washington Wellness Park. The Marr Park public burn is scheduled for April 18th at dusk, weather permitting.
Three prescribed burns have already taken place this spring including the Burr Oak Addition of the English River Wildlife Area near Wellman, and Fern Cliff and Sockum Ridge Timbers near Wayland. The controlled burns are done to manage vegetation, reduce wildfire risk and promote the health and diversity of prairies and woodlands.
