The Washington Demons and Columbus Wildcats got a new soccer underway by splitting their doubleheader last night at Washington Wellness Park.
Washington won the girls’ game, striking first when sophomore Ashley Ramirez scored a goal in the 34th minute. Senior Maya Murphy would score off a corner kick as the final seconds of the first half expired to give the Demons a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
Washington grabbed the initial lead in the boys’ match as well, needing only two minutes to pass before senior Kevin Marcelino found the back of the net. But, after a weather delay, Columbus would tie the match up going into halftime.
The Demons would get on the board again in the second half when junior Edwin Cortes set up freshman Johan Recendez for his first career goal, but the Wildcats struck twice in the final 40 minutes to claim a 3-2 victory.
Both Columbus teams now prepare to face Mediapolis tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Washington boys will next play tomorrow at Highland, while the Demon girls look to start the season 2-0 when they host Williamsburg.
