Shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, authorities responded to a report of a single-vehicle wreck on Highway 1, approximately four miles south of Kalona. According to the report from the Iowa State Patrol, 18-year-old Alaina H. McNurlen of Keota was traveling northbound when her 2004 Saturn Ion crossed the center line. McNurlen swerved back into the northbound lane, overcorrected and lost control, recrossing the center line, across the southbound lane of traffic, the vehicle then entered the ditch and rolled. She was ejected from the vehicle and died from her injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt. Responding to the scene were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol. The incident remains under investigation by the State Patrol.
