Wellman is one of eight communities in Iowa getting a slice of a $3.7 million pie for water infrastructure projects. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) announced grants this month as part of the water and sewer infrastructure projects through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
Wellman is receiving $500,000 in CDBG funding for water main replacements. The city is providing $1.6 million to the project.
The CDBG program is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In Iowa, the IEDA oversees administering these funds to non-metropolitan parts of the state. Projects receive grant funds based on the benefit to low- and moderate-income residents, the financial need, and project impact and readiness, along with the commitment of local resources to a project.
