A new boys’ track and field season is about to begin for the Washington Demons, who are trying to pile up more accolades like a fifth straight Southeast Conference team championship and more state medals.
Junior Josh Anderson walked away from state last season with top-five finishes in the wheelchair 100, 200 and 400-meter races, as well as the wheelchair shot put, and will be gunning to hit double-digit state medals for his career trophy case.
Washington returns distance runners like senior Sawyer Tschantz and junior Andrew Rees, who helped the 4-by-800-meter relay team reach the Class 3A state meet. Rees also qualified individually for the 3,200 meters.
The Demons also started to turn a corner in the sprints at the end of last season and will have back members of their 4-by-100 and distance medley teams like junior Kael Williams and seniors Jayfred Espinosa and Keider Gomez Valdez. Head coach Steve Roth tells KCII Sports that all the pieces are in place for his team to be a special one once again.
“Not many teams get to five-peat,” Roth says. “We have a great shot, if we stay healthy, [to be] right there at the door of the conference championship, and that’s what the kids are looking forward to. That’s one one our main goals.”
Also back for Washington boys’ track is sophomore Greyson Hartman, who qualified for state in the shot put toss, and senior Seth Shepherd, who reached state in the 400.
The Demons will get the track season going with three indoor meets, the first of which is the annual Dickinson Relays inside the UNI-Dome later today at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids.
