The Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Brighton man on animal neglect charges that resulted in the death of one dog. Officials arrested 47-year-old Darek Anderson of Brighton on two Washington County warrants on Thursday. The warrants were for animal neglect with serious injury or death, and animal neglect no injury, both were simple misdemeanors.

According to court documents, on October 5th of 2024 a deputy was dispatched to 503 East Madison Street in Brighton for a dog that was found dead in its kennel in the garage. Upon arrival, the deputy observed a deceased dog in a kennel in the garage with another dog also in a kennel in the garage. The living dog was described as extremely skinny and appeared that she hadn’t eaten in days. Two more dogs were observed on the porch, one also appeared to be extremely skinny and malnourished. The fourth dog appeared to have a healthy weight. The deputy noted that the garage did not have adequate ventilation for animals to live in along with outside temperatures ranging from 69 degrees to 90 degrees through the prior week. According to authorities, the temperature inside the garage would have been nearly 100 to 110 degrees. PAWS and More Animal Shelter was contacted to retrieve the dogs. Officials were later notified by the shelter that the dogs that were retrieved from Anderson’s house had parvo, a highly contagious canine disease. The dogs were then transferred to the Town and Country Vet Clinic where they stayed for approximately two weeks for isolation and hospitalization.

Anderson was transported to the Washington County Jail on Thursday on a $2900 bond where he later bonded out. A trial date has yet to be set. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
