
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union hosted the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament for girls’ wrestling Thursday night, and the home team had a strong showing. Columbus/WMU finished second in the team standings with a team score of 105, behind Pekin but 25 points clear of third-place Van Buren County.
Among the Wildcats’ best individual performers was Josie Nelson, who won a conference championship at 145 pounds. The senior started her final season undefeated by winning all three of her bouts via pin.
Kalley Deese began her career for Columbus/WMU by pinning both of her opponents at 125 and taking home a conference crown. Fellow freshman Sophia Browning was third at 130, as was classmate Lilly Pugh at 140.
WACO’s Elyssa Graber continued her undefeated start to the season by pinning all three of her opponents to win the title at 105 lbs. Fellow senior Rylee Rice was the runner-up at 110, while sophomore Deedra Graber was third at 115 and freshman Bella Bonar was fifth at 120 to help the Warriors finish fourth as a team.
Sophomore Chloe Sexton brought home a conference title for Lone Tree by pinning to win both of her bouts at 190 lbs. Senior Alex Dautremont took second place at 140 for the Lions, while sophomore Carlee Sexton was third at 105.
Lone Tree also picked up bronze medals from sophomore Olivia Magruder at 135; junior Ashlynn Sojka at 235; and senior Kayleigh Rundlett at 145. Freshman Maiya Singbeil led Highland by taking the silver at 135 lbs.
