The Washington Demons won their first home match of the new volleyball season Thursday, defeating Mediapolis in straight sets. Washington edged out Mediapolis 25-22 in the first set and took a similarly close second frame 25-21, but the Demons would complete the sweep by winning the third set, 25-20, as well.

Junior outside hitter Leighton Messinger led the Washington attack with 10 kills and added eight digs and one blocked shot on defense. Senior Ella Greiner came up with nine kills, one serving ace and six digs, while junior Taylor Miksch and sophomore Layla Green combined for 12 kills and two blocks in the middle.

Senior setter Lauren Hinrichsen handed out 28 assists to go with a team-high four aces as the Demons improve to 4-3. Washington plays this weekend at a tournament in Anamosa.
