The Hillcrest Academy Raven baseball team met two types of Falcons this week in Southeast Iowa Superconference exchanges.
Tuesday was a hard one for Hillcrest, falling to Louisa-Muscatine in Letts 5-4. Each team was on the board early, the Ravens with one run in the first, L-M with two. Hillcrest seesawed back up 3-2 with a pair of runs in the second, only to see L-M tie it with one in the fourth, and take the lead with another in the fifth. The Ravens rallied one more time with a run in the sixth to tie the game, before the Falcons walked-off a winner in the seventh. L-M out hit Hillcrest 16-5 in the game, the Ravens drew four walks to two for the Falcons. Hillcrest hits leader was Rowan Miller with two in three tries and an RBI. Mason Helmuth and Lincoln Miller also drove in one each. Seth Ours, Phoenix Anderson, and Rowan and Lincoln Miller all scored once. Anderson went six on the hill, giving up 10 hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out four. Ours took the loss working the seventh. Hayden Cantrell and Ty Northup each had three hits and an RBI to lead L-M. Owen Klocksiem was the winning pitcher. The loss was the first of the year for the Ravens dropping them to 3-1, L-M is 2-5.
Wednesday afternoon revenge came for the Ravens, beating up on West Burlington 10-0 in five innings. Three spots went on the board for Hillcrest hitters in each of the first, third and fourth innings, with the final tally ending the game in the fifth. Hillcrest doubled up the Falcons in hits 8-4, drew seven walks and took advantage of two West Burlington errors. Ours had two hits for Hillcrest and a pair of runs scored. Helmuth drove in two. Rowan Miller, Anderson, Mason Bender and Lawson Schrock all had a hit and an RBI. Anderson scored three times, Liam Schrock twice. After the game, Raven winning pitcher Liam Schrock talked with KCII Sports about his complete game shut out.
Schrock said, “The key was throwing a lot of strikes, making them hit it and banking on my teammates on defense to make plays. Today on defense we played really well, no errors. On offense, (Coach) said we need to be more aggressive. When we see a good pitch jump on it and not wait.”
He went five innings, giving up four hits, one walk and struck out three.
The Ravens are now 4-1 on the year, West Burlington drops to 1-7. The Ravens host the Wapello Indians Thursday.
