One individual is dead following a fire that occurred in Tiffin earlier this week.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, February 25, Johnson County Deputies responded to a welfare check at 192 Stephans Street in Tiffin. Deputies made contact with a resident at the home, and a short time later a fire developed. The fire spread to the adjoining duplex residence at 194 Stephans Street. Both residences were occupied at the time of the fire, and the occupants were evacuated.

Two Johnson County Deputies were treated and released from the hospital. James Christensen, a 34-year-old resident of 192 Stephans Street was transported by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Both residential units sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, and the case remains under investigation. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Tiffin Fire Department, Coralville Police Department, Coralville Fire Department, Iowa City Fire Department, North Liberty Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance, Johnson County Joint Communication Center, Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office, Red Cross, Mid-American Energy, and Alliant Energy.
