The boys hoops season unofficially gets underway tonight in the Wellman and Kalona area with a pair of boys basketball jamborees. At Mid-Prairie, the Golden Hawks are hosting their annual event that features four matchups of teams from southeast Iowa. Opening the evening are West Branch and Mount Pleasant at 6p.m. at 6:45, head coach Mitch Eslick and the Sigourney Savages, who were 13-10 last season, will see the Central Lee Hawks who finished 4-18 a year ago. The third of four matchups pits Pekin against Tipton at 7:30 and the nightcap features the home Golden Hawks against Eddyville-Blakesburg. Mid-Prairie was 12-11 last season and is fresh off of an achieve challenge scrimmage Friday against the WACO Warriors where they were beaten 57-39 despite 12 points from Ace Peck. The Rockets were 20-3 last season. All action is one half in length, played under normal rules with officials and does not count on any of the team’s overall records. Action begins at 6p.m. at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman.

At Hillcrest Academy in Kalona, the Raven boys host their jamboree tonight. The quadruple-header opens at 6p.m. with Holy Trinity taking on Wilton. At 6:45, head coach Paul Kissell and the WACO Warriors take the floor against the Benton Bobcats. The Warriors were 21-2 last season, undefeated champions of the North Division of the Southeast Iowa Superconference. They flexed their muscles Friday in a 57-39 road Achieve Challenge Scrimmage win at Mid-Prairie, outrebounding the Hawks and winning the turnover battle, led by a 16 point 11 rebound double double for Colton Leichty and 13 points for Hunter Hughes. Benton was 7-12 a season ago. At 7:30 New London will take on BGM and the nightcap at 8:15p.m. sees the home Ravens on Dwight Gingerich Court against Iowa City High. Hillcrest was 12-11 last year, the Little Hawks, 8-16. All action is one half in length, played under normal rules with officials and does not count on any of the team’s overall records. Action begins at 6p.m. at Hillcrest Union in Kalona.
