The Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball team seems unstoppable these days. WMU cruised to another conference win by beating the Highland Huskies 57-23 on Tuesday night. The Wolves led 18-0 at the end of the first quarter, and their dominant defensive effort would continue all night.
On offense, senior Bradie Buffington led the scoring with 12 points and also collected eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Seniors Keely Malone and Anna Anderson knocked down shots from the perimeter and combined for 20 points, while senior Melina Oepping added seven points, 12 rebounds and five steals.
Highland junior star Sarah Burton was held in check, hitting only one of her 11 shot attempts and scoring just four points. Burton added five rebounds and five steals, while Husky junior Kerra Longbine came off the bench to hit two three-pointers and finish with team highs of six points and five boards.
Highland drops to 2-4 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 3-5 overall. Winfield-Mount Union, ranked 13th in the state in Class 1A, is now a perfect 10-0. The Wolves are off until they visit Lone Tree on January 6th.
