The Broadway Musical Mary Poppins will be coming to the Washington Community Center this week with shows set to begin on June 17th.
The Washington Community Theater has been putting on plays all fall and this will be their first musical production since ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ in 2019. One of the main highlights of the show will be the debut of young actors Greta Piette and Quintyn Garibay who will be playing Jane and Michael Banks. Mary Poppins takes place in London so when asked about how two actors making their debuts developed and honed their British accents both Garibay and Piette provided some unique details.
Garibay ended up picking up the accent not from across the pond but rather south of the border.
“I was in Mexico for vacation. I met these two British siblings who came up to me and were like yeah we’re on holiday. I made friends with them so I ended up picking up a British accent in Mexico and that helped me for my audition.”
Piette on the other hand used a more traditional method to develop her accent.
“I feel like I’ve been doing accents my whole life and I love playing with them. The way I learned an accent was by watching British movies and mimicking what they say and then practicing over and over what they say.”
The show dates and times are June 17th,18th, 24th and 25th at 7:30pm with the afternoon matinees being June 19th and 26th at 2:30pm.
