The first tournament of 2022 for the Sigourney-Keota wrestling team was another strong one on Saturday with the Savages placing third out of 15 teams in Ottumwa.

SK managed 180.5 points on the day being just behind Albia’s 184 and Ottumwa’s 191.5. Two Savages took home gold with Aidan Schuster being perfect at 182 lbs and Conner Reed doing the same at 220 lbs. Schuster collected a pair of pins in 1:29 and 38 seconds before a 12-0 major decision victory in the semis. He capped off the day in the finals with a pin in 2:00 for the crown over Newton’s Wyatt Weter. Reed won all three of his bouts by falls in 1:32, 1:11, and 1:10 in the championship over Burlington’s Julian Perez-Hall. Other podium finishes included Zach Smithart second at 285 lbs, Evan Dawson third at 152 lbs, and Jack Clarahan third at 170 lbs. Clarahan eclipsed the monumental 100 career win mark during the tournament.

The Savages return to the mat Thursday in a home triangular.
