It was a non-conference doubleheader in Washington last night with the Demon boys rolling to victory and the girls having a hard time against Burlington Notre Dame.
It was Cancer Awareness Night in Washington with the girls wearing pink jerseys and the boys supporting other pink attire. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. As heard on KCII, the boys game saw the Nikes (4-7) hang tough with Washington for five minutes with a 9-8 Demon lead that quickly stretched to 20-10 after an 11-2 spurt to close the quarter. The tally never got back to single digits again with the orange and black leading 33-16 at half and the margin ballooned to 26 before coasting in the fourth for a 61-44 win. Ethan Patterson hit three second half triples to finish with a game-high 20 points and Kasen Bailey was right behind with 18. Lance Sobaski was also in double figures with 10 points and 11 boards. Head Coach Collin Stark knew how big the close to the first quarter was. “That was the difference. Sometimes you can pinpoint a few minutes here or there in a game that can make a big impact and that is when we made our push. We started to ramp up the pressure a little bit and turned them over that led to easy points for us.” Washington wins their fourth in a row by improving their record to 10-1.
By the time the Demon girls found their footing against the No. 7 ranked in Class 1A Nikes, the hole was too deep to claw their way out of in a 56-30 loss. They were held scoreless in the first quarter and found themselves down 22-0 after one on the strength of a stifling Nike (11-0) press. Once Alex Murphy hit a jumper to open up the scoring, the offense started to find a rhythm and won the second quarter 13-10. They still trailed 32-13 at half and the deficit never got under 17 again in the non-conference defeat. Lauren Krieger led a balanced Notre Dame attack with 15 points. Kaylin Long paced Washington offensively with 12 points while Murphy had six points and 14 rebounds. The team drops to 1-9 overall and they will try to improve their 1-4 Southeast Conference mark tonight against Keokuk. This will be the first of two meetings this week between these squads and the Chiefs come in with a 7-3 overall mark and 5-0 in the league. The girls only game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Washington and can be heard on FM 106.1 KCII.
