
A pair of KCII area girls basketball teams will face their first live test of the new season tonight when they travel to Packwood for the Pekin jamboree. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and Sigourney Savages will be two of the eight teams participating tonight.
The Golden Hawks were 10-12 overall a season ago, 9-10 in the River Valley Conference. The Hawks return their leading scorer and rebounder from last year with Maddie Nonnenmann posting 13 points and seven boards per game. She was an elite all-RVC selection last year. Amara Jones is also back after leading Mid-Prairie as a sophomore with four assists per night. Jones was an honorable mention all-RVC pick. Mid-Prairie averaged 44 points per game last year, while giving up 44 per night. They shot 38% from the floor, 24% from three point range and 56% from the foul line. They averaged 31 rebounds each game, 12 steals, 12 assists and 21 turnovers. The Hawks have to replace seniors Myah Lugar and Phelan Hostetler who were both all-south division River Valley picks. Lugar left Mid-Prairie as the all-time leader in three point field goals made and averaged eight points per game last year. Hostetler finished fifth in 3A a season ago with 54 blocked shots and led the RVC South shooting 51% from the floor. Mid-Prairie will take on Albia who finished 6-14 a year ago, 2-10 in the South Central Conference, finishing last. The Lady Dees scored 38 points per game a year ago and gave up 50. They shot 28% from the floor, 24% from long range and 58% at the line. They pulled in 31 rebounds, dished out seven assists, had nine steals and committed 19 turnovers per game a year ago. Albia lost four seniors to graduation including leading scorer and rebounder Halle Hindman who averaged 11 points and seven boards per contest. They do return assist and steals leader Sophie Waber for her junior season. The Hawks and Lady Dees tangle at 7p.m.
The Sigourney Savages enter the game off of an 18-6 2020-21 season. Sigourney was 12-3, second place in the South Iowa Cedar League. They shot 39% from the floor, 28% from downtown, 51% at the line, hauled in 28 boards, dished out nine assists, grabbed nine steals and committed 15 turnovers a night a year ago. Sigourney lost a trio of seniors from last year’s team including leading scorer and rebounder Kaylee Weber who averaged a double double a season ago of 20 points and 11 rebounds. She was a first team all-SICL selection. They will also be without assists leader Joselyn Abell. She was an honorable mention all-conference pick. Leading returner for Sigourney is Carly Goodwin who posted nine points per game in her first varsity season. She shot 34% from the floor including 32% from beyond the arc. The Savages draw Moravia tonight. The Lady Mohawks were 14-9 last year, 7-3, third place in the Bluegrass conference. Moravia lost six seniors from last year’s team including their top four scorers, led by Kim Chandanais 11 points per game. She also led the Mohawks at three assists per night. Gracie Hoffman, the leading rebounder a year ago is also gone after pulling down nine boards per game. The Savages and Mohawks meet at 6:15p.m.
Other teams competing include Twin Cedars taking on Cardinal at 5:30p.m. and Pekin hosting Van Buren at 7:45p.m.
