Turning heads is exactly what the Washington cross country teams did last night at Wildwood State Park in Ottumwa with a couple top two finishes in the team standings.
Despite being majority underclassmen, the Demon girls showed the future is bright with a first place finish out of eight teams with 57 points to just edge out perennial power Pekin with 58. Quincy Griffis led the team on the night with an eight place finish in 21:51 and fellow freshman Lauren Horak was 13th (22:17). Taylor Bartholomew (22:43), Isabella Lujan (22:47), and Kendall Hinrichsen (22:49) rounded out the top five with 17th, 18th, and 19th place, respectively.
The boys placed second with 68 points only behind #1 in 2A Danville with 23. Lance Sobaski was running side by side with top ranked Ty Carr of Danville for much of the race when the Demon senior turned on the jets in the last half mile to place first in 16:32. Carr crossed the finish line 14 seconds later. Sophomore Micah Rees had a personal record time of 17:13 to also crack the top five in fourth. Drew Horak finished 16th (18:33), Tyler Alderton 17th (18:38), and Cameron Vongpanya 34th (19:57).
The Demons get back at it Thursday in Fairfield.
