A spring tradition for high school, collegiate and professional track and field athletes has been added to a list of events put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 111th Drake Relays was originally scheduled to take place April 22nd through the 25th on the blue oval in Des Moines but has been postponed indefinitely. The high school qualifying cut-off would have fallen on April 16th. In a statement from the Drake Athletic Department, administration officials say “Our top priority is the health and well-being of our participants and spectators. As such, we are continuing to monitor the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, including related information and guidance from city, state and national officials regarding potential impact to the safety of our event.” This postponement also includes the Drake Road Races, Grand Blue Mile and any other related events. All events affiliated with the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union including practice and competition have been canceled through April 13th.
