
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk basketball teams travel to West Branch tonight to meet the state ranked Bears in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawk boys are 5-13 on the year after a 76-54 win over Anamosa on Thursday night behind 17 points from Brad Tornow, 16 for Aidan Rath, 12 for Carter Harmsen and 10 for Ethan Trimpe. On the season Harmsen has the team lead at 12 points per game. Tornow has the team lead with 76 assists. Rath has pulled down a team best 110 boards.
West Branch comes in at 16-2 on the campaign. They are ranked No. 9 in this week’s poll from the Associated Press for class 2A. The Bears cruised by West Liberty on the road Tuesday 55-36 with 15 points from Matt Whaley. On the year the Bears were led by Jeff Bowie at 14 points per game, but he has stepped away from the team after signing with the Iowa Hawkeyes for football. Moving into that void is Simon Palmer at 10 points per game. Matt Whaley has a team best 60 assists and 32 steals. Tanner Lukavsky is best for the Bears on the glass with 105 rebounds. These two teams met in Wellman in late January with West Branch coming from 17 down to take the Hawks to overtime and win on a buzzer beater from Lukavsky 57-55.
In the girls contest, Mid-Prairie comes in at 7-12 on the year after a 71-35 win over Anamosa on Thursday where Myah Lugar scored 23 points including five three point goals. On the season the Hawks are led by Maddie Nonnenmann at 12 points per game, but Mid-Prairie will be without her services the rest of the season after suffering a wrist injury against Washington. Lugar is the leading remaining scorer at 10 points per game, she is also Mid-Prairie’s leading rebounder with 91 on the season. Amara Jones leads the Golden Hawk guard court with 73 steals and 60 assists.
West Branch comes in with a 16-3 overall record. The Bears are ranked No. 6 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Last time out the Bears won at No. 11 West Liberty 58-41 with Sasha Keonig putting up 23 and Taya Young 11. On the season the Bears are led by Koenig at 15 points per game. She is also best on the team with 111 assists and 71 steals. Kaiya Luneckas has pulled in 162 rebounds. In Wellman earlier this year the Bears won 74-27.
