The opening act of the Mid-Prairie girls basketball season had it all on Tuesday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman as the Durant Wildcats scored a 48-45 River Valley Conference win. Early on, the game featured defense, Durant led 12-9 after one quarter and the Golden Hawks came back to even the count at 19 at the half. In the second half, each team held a lead of six or more down the stretch, the Golden Hawks biggest advantage of the night came on an Ella Cadena three point goal with five minutes remaining to put the Hawks up 39-33. Durant countered with a 10-0 run to take the lead back and they would not give it up again. In the final 10 seconds of the game, the Golden Hawks had a chance to tie down three, but an over-and-back call turned Mid-Prairie over. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger talked about what he saw from his team. “In the second quarter especially we did a great job of pressuring them and keeping our hands back to avoid fouling. Offensively we wanted to attack the basket. That created some outside opportunities too. It was good to see us knock down outside shots early.”

The Hawks were led by Myah Lugar with 10 points. With the loss, the Hawks are now 0-1 on the year and will face West Liberty next week in Wellman.
