A Washington man intentionally drove the wrong way on Highway 218 and crashed into a bridge early Tuesday morning. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, at 1:43 a.m. Lee County Ambulance personnel were transporting a patient to Iowa City when they observed a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 218. The vehicle was north of Mt. Pleasant and crashed into a bridge. The driver was 63-year-old Thomas Allan Colthurst of Washington.

Henry County deputies and first responders arrived on scene to find a black Toyota Camry had crashed into a bridge in the 2000 grid of Highway 218. Colthurst sustained life threatening injuries and had to be airlifted by Med Force to the University of Iowa hospitals. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, it was found that he had intentionally driven on the wrong side of the highway. Mt. Pleasant Fire Department and Henry County paramedics assisted at the scene.
