On a warm October evening of running, the Washington cross country teams hosted their one meet of the year on Tuesday at the Washington Golf and Country Club.

The Southeast Conference boys’ teams showed how close in ability they are, as the top three teams were separated by one point. Fort Madison narrowly took home the title with 52 points while Fairfield and Washington were right behind with 53. The Trojans edged the Demons in a tiebreaker for second place. Evan Horak has found his stride with his second consecutive meet win claiming first place in 18:00. The senior’s time was 25 seconds faster than the second place finisher and he tells KCII Sports being fresh helped him last night. “I had an easy weekend so I knew I would have fresh legs. The last mile was a grind but I was able to pull it off so I felt good about it.” Plenty of Demon medals were to go around, as Lance Sobaski placed fourth (18:38), Justin Simmering was 12th (19:55), and Elijah Morris placed 13th (19:59). Sigourney was fifth with 231 points and Mason Moore crossed the finish line in 22nd (21:03). Highland nabbed sixth place with 282 points and Noah Oriano led them in 42nd (23:01). Lone Tree and Keota did not have team scores, but the Lions’ Alberto Cortes placed 20th (20:47) and the Eagles’ Dakota Hammen was 65th (28:36).

On the girls’ side Washington claimed fourth with 111 points while Mount Pleasant took care of business with 22. Highland was fifth with 146 and Sigourney was sixth with 239. Grace Voss was the first Demon to finish in 14th (24:23) and Abby Voss was 19th (25:24). Madison Thomann headlined the race for the Huskies placing third (22:36) and Sigourney’s Georgia Atwood was 42nd (30:18). Lone Tree’s Macie Bopp finished in the top 10 in sixth (23:21) and Keota’s Jenna Jaeger was 38th (28:56).
