Kalona approved contracts to formalize agreements to share the community center with the Mid-Prairie School District and Performance Therapies. Prior to the school year, the city agreed to let Mid-Prairie use half of the gym for volleyball and basketball practice. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says this agreement prevents students from having to practice before school and having to arrive as early as 6 a.m. Schlabaugh said he and Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider wanted to see how the gym would be utilized before formalizing the partnership.
Mid-Prairie will pay the city $60,000 over five years starting with $10,000 for the 2018/19 school year. Kalona also approved a five-year lease with Performance Therapies to keep their offices in the community center.
