The Winfield-Mt. Union and Columbus basketball teams squared off in Columbus Junction on Thursday night, with the Wolves taking the sweep.

The girls’ game was first, with the Wolves taking a commanding 31-point victory.  It was all W-MU from the start, outscoring the Wildcats 22-7 in the first quarter.  Columbus would not score more than eight points in a single quarter, taking the loss 57-26.  Notable performances on the night include Liana Sweezer, who put up 14 points for the Wolves to lead all scorers, and Jenna Buffington, who put up yet another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The boys’ game was next, with the Wolves scoring their first win of the year by a 46-34 score.  A big first quarter is what did it for Winfield, outscoring the Wildcats 22-6 in the first eight minutes of play.  The score was 35-14 at halftime.  Columbus outscored the Wolves 14-10 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

The wins move W-MU’s girls and boys’ teams to 4-12 and 1-13, respectively, while the Wildcat girls and boys fall to 0-15 and 1-13.  Columbus will open up their coming week on Tuesday at Washington, while Winfield-Mt. Union will stay at home to take on Highland.
