With a vote of 4-2, the Washington City Council approved an invoice for recycling costs to WEMIGA Waste. The invoice was for $1,543.15. Councilperson Brendan DeLong explained why he didn’t approve the item, “It’s not as painful as I thought. I still remain opposed to paying this extra for the reasoning of the original contract should’ve been bound and they not come back to ask for more, so I remain opposed.” In August, the council approved an amendment to the existing contract to cover the costs of recycling when it exceeds the profit. Those costs would be split between the city and the county. The market shifted, and instead of selling the recycled plastic and paper products, the company was having to pay for them to be removed. The city and the county have a 28E agreement for the recycling center.
