The Washington and Mid-Prairie wrestling teams both traveled to Fort Madison last night for a wrestling triangular, with each team taking on the Bloodhounds and facing off against each other. The Demons and Golden Hawks both lost to Fort Madison, and Washington took the duel against M-P.
The night opened up with the Southeast Conference foes duking it out, with the Bloodhounds taking a three-point team victory, 39-36. It started with the 182 weight class, with Tristin Westphal-Edwards getting the pin and earning his 150th career victory. Logan Escher wrestled at 220, leaving his normal 195 spot open, and got the pin there, but things took a bit of a turn after the heavyweight match.
Fort Madison’s Danen Settles took out Tristan Allender with a pin, and the Bloodhounds proceeded to win the next two matches via the fall as well. Walker Ikerd won his match at 120 by a 14-0 major decision, and Brandon Dickel would be pinned in the 126 match. Justin Simmering got his first varsity action of the year for the Demons at 132, losing by a 5-0 decision; the only Demon loss to not end in a pin. They entered the 138 match down 33-16.
Garrett Ikerd took the mat in the 138, getting his lead up to 14 for a lot of the third period. But he got the take-down he needed with less than five seconds left in the match to grab the tech fall. Dillan Sanders would win the 145 by minor decision, and David Hora and Ayden Frazier would pick up pins in the 152 and 160 to take a three-point lead going into the final match.
Washington typically didn’t wrestle anyone at 170 and initially left it open, but with the meet on the line, they sent Keaton Murphy out to try and seal the deal. But Fort Madison’s Chance Hocker proved to be too much to handle, getting the pin in 50 seconds and securing the Bloodhound victory.
Washington saw Mid-Prairie next, with the Demons downing the Golden Hawks by a team score of 66-18. Several open weight classes didn’t help the Golden Hawks’ case, but they did have a standout performance from heavyweight Gannon Callahan, who got the pin against Washington’s Marshall Patterson after four minutes and 38 seconds. Their other 12 points came via the forfeit in the 170 and 220 weight classes. All of Washington’s victories either came from the forfeit or the fall.
Then it was the Golden Hawks’ turn to take a crack at Fort Madison. It opened up with the 220, which Isaac Boucher dominated to secure his 21st win of the year. Fort Madison would proceed to win the next nine matches, seven of which came via forfeit, before Cael Garvey of the Golden Hawks downed his foe with a pin at 160. Mid-Prairie would win two of the last three matches, but it wasn’t enough, as they took the loss 51-24.
The night’s outcome moves the Demons’ duels record to 13-6 and Mid-Prairie’s to 5-11. Each team will go to Highland tomorrow for the Gary Curtis Invitational.
