The Washington wrestling team welcomed Keokuk to town last night for a Southeast Conference duel, with the Demons putting the beatdown on the Chiefs and winning 78-0.
In a duel that lasted a whole 23 minutes, several forfeits on the Keokuk side helped give the Demons a sizable lead to begin with. But for the Demons who did wrestle, the trend continued from last Thursday night, with every head-to-head match being decided by fall. Every match but one lasted under 90 seconds, but the one that didn’t was one of the more anticipated matches of the night.
Brandon Dickel wrestled his first match of the season at the 126 last night, with that one going into the third period. Dickel dominated his match, getting himself up to one point away from a technical fall before delivering the ending blow with the pin at 4:31. Head coach Brent Van Weelden praised the junior when the duel was done, saying he’s glad to have him back.
“The thing about Brandon is that he’s exciting. He’s kind of crazy to watch. He’s usually all over the place, and it looks like tonight he kind of continued what he was doing last year,” Van Weelden said.
“It’s good to have him back in the lineup at full speed. This is his first time to wrestle this season, so it’s nice for him to get a win.”
With the win, the Demons move to 10-2 in duels this season. Their next action of the year comes on Saturday when they head to Waukee to compete in the Al Garrison Duels.
