The Washington basketball teams took to the road last night for their first Southeast Conference doubleheader of the season, with both teams taking the loss to Fairfield.
The girls’ game was first, with the Demons falling 62-48. They kept it close for a lot of the first quarter, but the Trojans went on a run at the end of the quarter and into the second. The Demons would never really recover, with a potential comeback being snuffed out in the final minutes. Halle Leyden had another good performance for the Demons, putting up 14 points.
Then came the boy’s game. The Demons were firing on all cylinders out of the gate, taking as much as a 10-1 lead in the first before ending the period at 14-6. The Trojans would come back in the second to tie it up at 18 going into the halftime break. The second half was all Fairfield, with the Trojans outscoring the Demons 37-19 in the final two quarters of play to take the win 55-37. Cade Hennigan led the way scoring-wise with 11.
With the losses, the girls fall to 3-2 and the boys to 1-2 on the young season. Each team will play single games to open up the week, with the girls going to Sigourney on Monday and the boys hosting top-ranked Oskaloosa Tuesday. Both of those games can be found on KCII.
