Soil moisture levels in Iowa are nearly all adequate. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, topsoil moisture across the state is 81% adequate and 18% surplus. In southeast Iowa, topsoil moisture is rated at 23% surplus, 73% adequate, and four percent short. Subsoil moisture levels are also lower in southeast Iowa than the state rates of 79% adequate and 19% surplus. Southeast Iowa’s subsoil moisture is nine percent surplus, 79% adequate, 10% short, and two percent very short. According to the National Weather Service, Washington received 3.7 inches of total precipitation, almost 1.5 inches above normal.
