The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Tipton for a River Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday.

In a pair of games heard on KCII, the girls scored a victory while the boys opened the season with a loss. The Mid-Prairie girls were a winner 52-46. Tipton started the game hot, opening up an 8-0 run. Mid-Prairie answered back with three straight three point goals to take the first lead of the night. With Tipton up 10-9 going to the second, the Hawks made their move, taking the lead midway through the second quarter and they wouldn’t give it up the rest of the night. The Golden Hawks led 28-23 at half and were up 41-34 going to the fourth quarter. Mid-Prairie would stretch their lead to 10 in the fourth before Tipton closed to three points. Kessa Jones hit a pair of free throws and Shae Becker had a big layup to hold off the Tigers. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Stephen Bender talked about the team win. “We shot nine of 17 from three which was a big improvement over our last game at West Liberty. Girls stepped in our third road game against a very good Tipton team. I wasn’t happy with our start, coming out and falling behind 8-0. Lots of unforced turnovers and mistakes. I called time out and got on them a little bit and what I like about this group is they take that and respond. Awesome job responding. They had a nice run to get a lead going into half.”

The Golden Hawks knocked down nine threes in the game, including seven in the first half. Maddie Nonnenmann led the way with 13 points, Myah Lugar had 11 and Shae Becker 10. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 3-0 on the year.

In the boys game it was Tipton with a 68-59 win. The Tigers started fast, sprinting out to a 17-4 lead, they led 27-10 after one quarter and 44-32 at half. In the second half, Mid-Prairie got on track and three separate times cut the Tiger lead to seven but could get no closer. Cale Robertson led the Hawks with 13 points, Chaz Patterson and Dominick Pickard each had 11. With the loss, the Hawks are now 0-1 on the year as they travel to West Liberty today to face the Comets.
