Volleyball teams across the Superconference came out to compete this past Thursday for the first round of the conference tournament, and the Winfield-Mt. Union team went down, going 0-3 in their pool.

The Wolves were pitted against three teams in the Superconference’s south division, which had the nine of the top ten seeds in the conference, including the top six.  Their opponents were the third and sixth seeds in the tournament in Mediapolis and Central Lee, respectively, along with Burlington Notre Dame.  It was not WMU’s day, as they never scored more than 17 points in a single set.

They started off against the hosting Central Lee Hawks, falling two sets to none by scores of 21-13 and 21-14.  They then faced off against Mediapolis, losing by ten in the first set but keeping it to within four in set two.  After that came 14th-seeded Burlington Notre Dame, who they lost to in a sweep, 21-17 and 21-16.

Jenna Buffington led the Wolves’ attack with 11 kills throughout the three games while also recording five service aces.  Jami Wilkerson and Kayla Edwards also stood out, recording 20 digs and 19 assists, respectively.  The two also combined to go 28-29 serving with three aces.

Their next action comes this Thursday when they host Iowa Mennonite.  The varsity match is scheduled for 7:30.
