Three KCII area teams were on the court at Thursday’s opening pool play round of the Southeast Iowa Superconference volleyball tournament.
Iowa Mennonite opened the night facing off with WACO. IMS took the match in three sets over the Warriors by scores of 21-16, 9-21 and 15-5. In match two it was IMS over Higihland 21-17, 18-21 and 15-9. IMS fell in their final match of the night to Van Buren 12-21 and 10-21. Mia Graber led IMS with 11 kills, Sami Miller had 13 assists and Suzanna Yoder 13 digs. Head coach Shannon Miller spoke about her teams night. “I like the fact that we were able to win both matches that went to three sets. I also like the way we played and tried to adjust against Van Buren.”
IMS is now 12-10 on the year and goes into Saturday’s finals in Burlington where they will face top seed Holy Trinity Catholic in the first round.
Following their opening loss to IMS in three sets, WACO also dropped their match to Van Buren 18-21 and 15-21. The Warriors rebounded to win their final match of the night, sweeping Highland 21-16 and 21-17. WACO head coach Jay Coble spoke after the tournament about his team’s performance. “There were some really good efforts on our part. We aren’t afraid of anybody. We came out and played hard. Nadiyah Brown was outstanding against Van Buren, she controlled the tempo in the middle. We have to learn to make the simple play in crunch time and we just aren’t doing that right now.”
The Warriors were led by Morgan Graber with 16 kills, Laney Graber had 40 assists, Quinn Scarff finished with 15 digs. The Warriors are now 11-7 on the year.
After dropping their matches to WACO and IMS, Highland was also swept by Van Buren 21-10 and 21-11. The Huskies are 1-13 on the year.
