With their 4-0 start, the Highland football team has breached the top ten after receiving votes for the last couple of weeks. Come Friday night, the eighth-ranked Huskies will have yet another good test as BGM comes to town.
The Huskies are riding a revamped offense from a season ago, and senior Trey Lasek has been in the driver’s seat all the way with 479 yards on 55 carries on the ground. He has also completed 54 percent of his passes for 353 yards when he’s had to throw it. And to put the icing on the cake, he’s scored twelve total touchdowns; six through the air, six on the ground.
On the other side, BGM is also unbeaten, only allowing a total of 24 points all season. But the secret to the Bears’ success might be more than talent alone.
The B in BGM stands for Brooklyn, which was the hometown of Mollie Tibbets, the University of Iowa student who went missing and was killed in the recent months. The starting quarterback and leader of the BGM team is Scott Tibbetts, Mollie’s younger brother. Head Husky football coach Scott Morel says this game is more than just two unbeaten teams.
“[BGM is] fighting for something more, and you can tell in their play,” Morel said. “So we’ll have to really step it up and match their intensity. They’re a nice squad; they’re doing some really good things.”
Kickoff in Riverside is scheduled for 7:00.
