It was famously said that, there’s no place like home.
The newest addition to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office feels the same way. Washington native Derek Glaspie was sworn in as the office’s newest Deputy on July 23rd. Glaspie, a 2004 graduate of Washington High School, has traveled the world but is looking forward to serving the local community. Glaspie served two separate deployments in the armed services, once to Iraq in 2007 and once to Afghanistan in 2012. During that time he worked with the military police forces including instruction to local nationals on how to conduct basic policing of their communities to build their own force. Glaspie spoke with KCII news about his dream to serve the local community through law enforcement and his excitement in returning home. “I would say I started my interest in law enforcement at about eight years old. Most young boys growing up want to be one of three things, an astronaut, a fire fighter or a policeman, and I leaned toward police. When getting sworn in I would say the feeling was checking something off of my bucket list. It was a great feeling of accomplishment and a dream fulfilled. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the community better. I’m looking forward to serving not only my nation but the community.”
Glaspie is filling an open position left after Deputy Zach Rozmus transferred to Washington County Conservation. He will be training with the sheriff’s office and attending the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy later this month.
