A church-turned community center will be celebrating several occasions at their annual cook off this Saturday.
The Clear Creek Heritage Association is a non-profit organization that owns the Saints Peter and Paul Church in the Clear Creek Township, and they just completed a restoration project of the church’s 22 stained glass windows. This restoration was funded in part by the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. Clear Creek Heritage Association board member Sheila Horras shares why this restoration benefits the church, “Well, for one thing it makes it more beautiful than it already is, it’s a community center. There was also a lot of heat loss in the wintertime through the windows because they were not tight. And just the fact it’s part of the history of that church is reason to keep them in place. That’s a lost art I think and it goes back many, many years so we wanted to keep the church as authentic as we could, so that’s why we restored them instead of replacing them.”
The church was closed in 2006, and now serves as a community center for a variety of functions, including the fourth annual barbecue cook off fundraiser happening this Saturday from 6-8 p.m. The church is turning 120 this month, and the public is welcome to attend the cook off, view the restored stained glass windows, and watch fireworks after dark.
