A current bank building may be the future home of Washington County offices.

The Washington County Board of Supervisors has been considering the five-story Federation Bank building in downtown Washington to expand county offices. At a previous supervisors meeting Supervisor Chairman Abe Miller said the board was approached by the bank before being placed on the market and the total cost for the building and furnishings would be $1.7 million. At this week’s meeting, Miller shared the engineer’s preliminary findings, “Early results were, I guess, or however you want to say how she figured it out, was that we are having enough space available there, but maybe not for supervisors. So we’ll have to do some calculating on what we’re going to do, I guess.” Miller said no cost estimate to renovate the building to fit the county needs has been done yet, the engineer was looking at overall square footage available.

Supervisor Jack Seward said he continues to receive positive comments about the idea from the public and he suggested drafting a motion to move forward with it in the coming weeks. He added that he’d like to get a commercial appraisal on the property before making a motion.

The bank is looking to build at a new location and the upper floors are already being rented by Washington County Public Health.
