The Washington Demon baseball team opened the new season Tuesday, falling to Clear Creek Amana in a pair of contests.
In games heard on KCII the Clippers took game one by a 9-2 count. CCA got on the board with three in the second inning and scored once more in the third to stretch their lead to 4-0. Washington broke through in the bottom of the third on a Wilx Witthoft sac fly that brought home Cade Hennigan to bring the Demons within 4-1. The Clippers would score four big insurance runs in the sixth to stretch their lead to 8-1. Washington got a single tally in the final frame when Kole Hinrichsen drew a bases loaded walk. Cam Armstrong got the win in game one going five and two thirds innings, allowing six Washington hits and striking out three. Jacob Hall took the loss for Washington allowing four runs on three hits and striking out five in four innings of work. Hennigan led Washington at the plate with his three for four night with a pair of runs scored.
In the nightcap CCA took a 17-4 win in six innings. The Demons struck first, pushing a run across in the first inning when Cody Ogden balked to drive home Hennigan. The Clippers answered with a run of their own in the top of the second. Washington would wrestle the lead back in the third, when Hennigan singled to drive in Trevor Quigley. Down 2-1 CCA scored three times in the fourth to go up 4-2, added three more in the fifth and then put together a monstrous 10 run sixth inning in which 15 batters saw the plate. Ogden recorded the win for CCA going five innings, giving up three hits, three runs and striking out five. Kole Hinrichson took the loss for Washington, lasting three and a third innings, giving up just one hit, striking out eight, and walking seven. Hennigan led the Washington offense going two for three with a pair driven in and a run scored. Washington is now 0-2 on the year as they get set to host Fort Madison Friday.
