Drivers in Kalona will be urged to slow down by speed sensors being installed this spring.

The city council purchased two ElanCity Solar speed sensors last fall that can be moved around at any time at about eight installed poles in the city.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh explains the sensors’ functions, “So it’s going to give you your current speed as you approach it. If you’re above the speed limit it’s going to flash at you and give you a ‘Slow Down’ message. Once you hit the desired speed limit it’s going to tell you ‘Thank You,’ and give you your speed at that time.”

With the warmer weather on Wednesday one sensor was installed on 14th Street, or Nutmeg Avenue, south of H Avenue. The sensor’s thumb drive can store up to one million car transactions from any direction, and the city plans to look at this data with the sheriff’s department to determine possible future enforcement.
