The Washington basketball teams hit the road last night to Fairfield for a Southeast Conference doubleheader and came away empty handed.
In the girls’ game the Demons hung tough for a while but the conference leading Trojans had the better end of a 65-50 contest. Early on the Demons did a great job attacking the zone against the Trojans and trailed just 13-12 after one. Fairfield turned it up defensively in the next two frames to outscore the Demons by 17. Washington committed 24 turnovers and couldn’t recover in the second half. The big story was the conference-leading scorer Nicole Buch who dropped a game-high 28 points. Sarah Nacos paced the Demons with 23 points and Morgan Brinning added 11. Washington falls to 5-9 on the season and the Trojans improve to 11-3.
In the boys game the Demons jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hang on, as they fell 69-48. Washington was red hot from the field in the first quarter and jumped out to a 17-10 lead. The Trojans started to settle in and went right at the undersized Demons down low. Fairfield took the lead at half 34-27 and kept the pressure on in the final two frames to manage the 11-point win. The 6’4’’ Austin Simpson was hard to stop down low, as he racked up 25 points for the Trojans. Cale Hobscheidt paced the Demons with 17 points including 13 in the first half. Jack Redlinger was also in double figures with 14. The Demons fall to 4-7 and Fairfield improves to 5-8.
It is a quick turnaround for the Demon boys when they travel to Kalona to face off with Iowa Mennonite School tonight. IMS (11-2) is coming off of a win Friday night against Columbus Community 51-31. The area matchup gets started at 6 p.m. tonight and you can hear all of the action on KCII started at 5:30 p.m.
