The City of Kalona has received its community rating from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program.

When Kalona initially entered the community rating system its residents received 5% off of premium costs for flood insurance. After reviewing the city’s work on flood management practices and its education and outreach to residents, FEMA has given an additional 10% discount, for a 15% total discount on homeowners’ flood insurance policies.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh looks to how the city can improve its rating further, “We think that we can increase that as well through the years, as we do more projects, as we do more outreach, as we do more things with the watershed, for example.”

FEMA will continue to annually review Kalona’s flood management practices and education.
