A plan is in place to demolish the Goncho Apartment building and replace it with townhouses.

At Tuesday’s Washington City Council meeting the council set a date for a consultation meeting and public hearing to amend the urban renewal plan to accommodate the project. City Administrator Brent Hinson explained the schedule for the project is for winter demolition and construction to begin in the spring.

The city would provide tax increment financing no more than $47,000 to reimburse the developer for asbestos abatement and demolition costs, which allows the developer to market the units for sale with a three-year tax abatement on the first $75,000 value. The projected figures show the City could pay itself back in around five years.

The plan is for the building to be torn down and six townhouse units to be built at 306 North Marion Avenue and 116 East 3rd Street.
